I am the owner and president of Page 1 Solutions, a website marketing agency representing attorneys (primarily personal injury attorneys), doctors (primarily plastic and cosmetic surgeons), and dentists (primarily cosmetic dentists) thorughout the US and Canada.

What are the biggest challenges in terms of content writing when working with your target market?

Content writing is extremely important. We have a dedicated staff of in-house writers who know our clients' verticals and their target customers. The biggest challenge is acquiring that knowledge. We have it because we concentrate on those verticals. After that, I would say that understanding what sets each client apart is crucial to an effective content marketing strategy.

There is a lot of talk about chatbots to drive business goals. What has been your experience with this trend?

Hi Sarah - Thank you for your inquiry. We definitely like our clients to use online chat. We have done case studies and have consistently found an increase in qualified leads without a drop in phone leads or contact form inquiries.

That said, I have significant reservations about using an automated chat bot. While these platforms are making advances, they are not as good a human answering chat inquiries. We are able to offer this service to our clients (with human responses) for $15 per lead. (There is no charge for chats from existing clients/patients or chats that are not inquiring about a service that our clients are offering.)

Digital ad spending is poised to surpass TV ad spending. Is this a problem for agencies or an opportunity

Hi RDCSALT - Thank you for your question. I believe that the tipping point is long past. TV is still a valid way to market your product or service, but since many people don't even own TVs and others are skipping the ads with DVRs and other technology, I believe that the efficiency of TV advertising is on the decline. 

Online advertising is where advertisers and agencies should be focusing their efforts because that is where the eyeballs are. There are so many ways to target consumers online including advertising on social media platforms like Facebook, display and youtube advertising, as well as Google AdWords among many other options.

What’s the biggest change in the agency business since you started?

Hi PROADLINE - Thank you for your inquiry. There is no question that the biggest change for my agency has been the fact that we can't just focus on organic SEO. When we started in 2001, organic SEO generated far more leads than anything else and we could just work on optimizing content and earning links.

Now, there are many more ways to promote your brand to consumers and generate leads. These include things like PPC, Facebook advertising, online video marketing, display advertising, inbound marketing and marketing automation, among many others.

The wide variety of marketing options as well as the wide variety of content strategies - both on-site and off-site content marketing has resulted in my agency expanding to allow our clients to take advantage of multiple marketing channels instead of relying exclusively on organic SEO.

Do you have plans to incorporate any other businesses areas besides the onse you are already covering? Why or why not?

We have dabbled with other verticals beyond lawyers, plastic and cosmetic surgeons, ophthalmologists and dentists over the years, but we have decided to stay focused on the verticals that we know the best. It allows us to write meaningful content for our clients because we understand their businesses and know what their prospective clients/patients are looking for.

What are some typical mistakes businesses make when working on SEO?

SEO is extremely complex and ever changing. The vast majority of SEO companies just do basic on-site optimization. That is only the beginning. You must also focus on off-site content and backlinks. In addition, you need to understand technical aspects of SEO such as schema.

All that said, I believe that on-site content - thorough, robust, organized, comprehensive, content that answers consumers' questions - whether that content is in writing, video, graphics, etc. is the foundation of any effective SEO strategy. If you don't focus on your content foundation, everything you do on SEO will be like building a house on quicksand.

Every client is different. The results will depend on the market and the level of competition. But, as stated in an answer to another question, content is the key to everything. That is your foundation. Start there and then work on the techical aspects of SEO.

What are the features needed to build an effective attorney website?

It depends on what type of practice the attorney has and what types of cases the attorney wants.

That said, I think it is important to highlight the types of cases the attorney wants and has had success with. This can be done graphically and it can also be done with text including verdicts and settlements as well as reviews and testimonials.

Next, I would make a point of getting high quality images of the attorney working with his colleagues, clients and staff.

I would also encourage the attorney to shoot videos - especially a home page video explaining what makes his practice different from all of the competitors and why a prospective client should retain his practice.

We have been trying to be environmentally friendly for quite some time. Over the years we have done a number of things from contributing to environmental charities to trying to use green energy and adopting an aggressive recycling program.

What actions are required to generate quality leads besides having a website and basic search engine marketing?

For starters, your website should be compelling and should clearly explain (graphically, with video and text) what makes that attorney and his practice unique and why a prospective client should choose him or her. The site should make it easy to contact the attorney by phone, email and/or chat -all of which should be prominently displayed and available throughout every page of the website.

Once you have a solid website that stands out and separates you from your competitors, then you need to drive traffic to it. There are many aspects of SEO and in today's world, you need to be effective at every level or the competitors will eat your lunch. Assuming you have solid organic positioning, I would encourage an attorney that is trying to generate quality leads to look into paid advertising including AdWords, paid Facebook ads and display advertising.

How do you keep up to date about the ever-changing world of digital marketing? Do you follow any particular news sources or gurus? If so, which ones?

That is a great question. Online marketing is constantly changing and it is virtually impossible to stay on top of everything. That said, I spend at least an hour a day staying up to date by reading online marketing blogs and social media. I also rely on my digital marketing team to keep me up to date. Each one of them specializes in a different aspect of online marketing such as SEO, social media, website development, etc.

One thing that surprises many people is that my clients actually give me lots of ideas and information that we are able to research and apply to the marketing strategies for all of our clients.

Finally, you can always read the Page 1 Blog, where we write about all the website marketing strategies for lawyers, doctos and dentists that we research on a regular basis.

How different is digital marketing for attorneys as opposed to other businesses? Do you need to have a particular approach to it?

Hi Jenz. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, lawyers in the US are all subject to the legal ethics rules in each state. Second, depending on the type of law the marketing should be targeting the specific demographic that the law firm wants to bring on as a new client.
